Biblical Principles in May-Can-Should Analysis

Question

Education Policy

Religion is one of the fundamental pillars supporting education in any political, economic, and democratic setting for a country. Therefore, it is important to adhere to biblical principles when formulating education policies as a way of streamlining the education system. As mentioned by Stephen V. Monsma, religion consists of integrity and humanitarian mandate, which has led to the development of various charitable organizations, hospitals, and schools (Monsma & Calvin Center for Christian Scholarship, 1986).

Consequentially, Christian ethics have provided guidelines through which good deeds are done, how they are done, and to whom. The paper analyses education and environmental policies using the May-Can-Should lens. Moreover, it examines the policies providing biblical recommendations for policy formulation.

The education policy, as presented in the book, conforms to biblical principles to some extent but again ignores some important issues. Based on the policy, schools are formed mainly for the benefits of the state, rather than for an individual’s benefit. This rule advocates for socialism as the basis of education. As a religion, it captures the old and contemporary culture through the infiltration of universities, schools, and churches, as well as the media, which is the way of transforming consciousness in the society (Monsma & Calvin Center for Christian Scholarship, 1986). It, thus, helps to create moral conscience among individuals starting from a young age and all the way to adulthood.

The infiltration of churches, schools, and churches also helps to protect the public from a small group of the business elite running the government. The business elite holds significant economic might of the country and tends to control the general government through various political affiliations. Such groups also control the executive offices, schools, and legislative bodies, thus influencing the moral school atmosphere. As mentioned by Kraft and Furlong (2004), public policy is not developed in a vacuum, but rather depends on environmental factors, such as the economy, free market, and separation of power.

Therefore, to protect the public from such moral corruption, the government should formulate biblical-oriented education policies (Kraft & Furlong, 2004). The policies should promote a collective and corporative effort, involving all stakeholders, such as parents and the media. Moreover, it should promote the development of progressive educational practices and ideas to instill and nurture good morals in learners and hence the society at large. This can be made possible by streamlining school rules, punishments, rewards, honor codes, relationships, extracurricular, teaching styles, and student government.

Environment (Energy) Policy

According to the environmental policy, there has been an improvement in the lifestyle, as well as the life expectancy of humanity, owing to the continued environment conservation. It has helped to find a cure to some of the world’s known deadly diseases, as well as the entire elimination of some diseases (Kraft & Furlong, 2004). Such advances are essentially based on biblical principles as a foundation, as well as service to neighbor and God. As compared to ancient times in AD 1700, most families did not have enough food, water and lived without electricity.

This, in turn, led to more deaths resulting from hunger and the consumption of dirty water. However, through the freedom and knowledge brought by religion and Christianity, individuals have gained security about their basic needs. Consequently, the need to protect the environment has grown, hence formulating the biblical-oriented environment legislations and strong environmental consciousness.

Even though the strategy advocates for consideration of scriptural standards in figuring ecological enactments, it does not address the issue altogether. According to the Bible, God made a man and a woman and gave them a favored spot among different animals to rule over the earth by rehearsing stewardship. In this way, the human is responsible before God for treating the making in a way that serves best the goals of God’s kingdom (Monsma & Calvin Center for Christian Scholarship, 1986). In any case, people have the opportunity to pick on the act of territory and good responsibility for the earth.

In conclusion, the formulation of public policies helps one to act in considerable freedom exercised within God’s moral boundaries (Kraft & Furlong, 2004). The government should, thus, strive to create a free society within its mandate by promoting policies that support the freedom of religion. It should involve the participation of religious organizations in formulating educational or environmental policies that would govern the public’s well-being.
