Social Media: Effect on Celebrities

The social media is among the leading inventions that have revolutionized the 21st century. Social media is an expression used to describe a multiplicity of web-based platforms, applications and technologies that allow people to socially interact online. Among the most popular social media  sites and applications are Facebook, MySpace and Twitter. These have content based on user participation and user-generated content. It has brought tremendous changes in almost all aspects of the modern age including athletes’ lives.

The sporting fraternity has brought about great athletes whose names are now very famous. For example Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. These personalities have reached the level of great celebrities with a large fan base. And it is known far and wide that wherever the celebrities go, the fans will follow. This truism is not only limited to the real world but also to the social media.

The social media has grown to supersede the mainstream media. These athletes, for instance, are all very active in the social media. Cristiano Ronaldo has a page in Facebook with such a big number of his fans who have marked the page with “the like” mark. From these web applications, the athletes have been able to post or tweet information about their opinions over prevailing issues of concern or even their private lives. Ronaldo announced his fatherhood status to the world through an update on Facebook when his son was born.
