Three Major Historical Individuals and Events

I take the view that Franklin Roosevelt, Civil Rights Act, and the events of 9/11 had the most significant impact on American history since 1865.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the 32th President of the United States (1933–1945). He became a president during the Great Depression and began a reform of social programs that made him very popular among the population. Roosevelt distinguished himself as an extraordinary, flexible politician, who could delicately feel the situation, guess the trend, promptly and accurately respond to the changing mood of all members of society. Roosevelt did everything to preserve and develop the existing socio-economic system in the country, and to strengthen the dominant position of the U.S. around the world (Copeland & Lamm, 1973).

July 2, 1964 U.S. President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act, which banned racial discrimination in the areas of trade, services and employment. Previously, the employer had the right to hire or not to hire a particular person, as well as the store owner could choose whether to serve the client or not. The new law confirmed the position that human rights are above the rights of ownership, and that the Federal Government will protect human rights. It has become a new landmark on the path to change the traditional social relations in the United States.

September 11, 2001 was marked by a terrible event. Terrorist act at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon is a series of terrorist attacks which was carried out by manned aircrafts. The raid killed 2,974 people, caused a significant crisis in the aviation and tourism industries, and led to a great change in the structure of security in the U.S. and worldwide. It was the proximate cause of the "war on terror" that President George W. Bush declared in his speech on September 20 (Titan Systems Corporation, 2001). The terrorist attacks of September 11 joined the American people and made the country stronger and safer. This tragedy has left a big mark in the history of the United States and around the whole world.

To sum up, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Civil Rights Act and terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 made a great contribution to the history of America, having transformed the country into united, undivided organism.
