Existential Ethics

Paul Sartre’s significant idea stresses that existence predates essence. He argues that freedom is what defines existence and in its absence, it predates essence. The philosopher emphasizes that the actions of human being and his behaviour defines people’s seeming qualities. It is not that a person utters the truth since he is honest, but rather he characterizes himself as honest by speaking the truth repeatedly until the people become persuaded of his actions. Moreover, his main argument was emphasizing that human beings have no predefined pattern for existence. Because of this, everyone lives his life; in essence, it defines that we sincerely are not a set of predefined typical features. His significance idea is that we must develop own meaning, true definition, demonstrate own values based on our actions. Paul Sartre stresses that person’s freedom is infinite and without limit (Hatzimoysis 114).


His notion on existentialism emphasised that individuals are completely free and therefore must be solely responsible for their own actions. The philosopher supported three fundamental conditions that are to be looked at in determining the true nature of man. He accentuated on action, freedom and person’s choices as fundamental conditions. Besides, Paul Sartre maintained that the only way to go above the senseless condition of humanity, demonstrated by suffering and imminent death is through practicing personal freedom and choice (Hatzimoysis 142). In addition, the freedom should go hand in hand with intelligence to determine what is right and what is wrong. This means that a person needs basic intellect, which is the truth of the mind to provide guidance if the conscience is affected. The conscience is important in determining what people choose from the freedom given to us. This means that if we are about to choose something and our conscience tells us that it is wrong, intellect tells us to rethink about the act before doing it. As a result, it is not so much that we choose to do an act, but rather the way we choose is important.

Authenticity requires us to conform to facts or experiences, worthy of trust and belief. Moreover, it asks us to live our inner greatness in the sense that we are honest with ourselves. In addition, it makes us to appreciate our strengths and weaknesses and to know ourselves entirely: what we aim, what our moral values are supposed to be. Besides, people are not supposed to be authentic in all that they choose even though it is required. It is due to the fact that some actions may have negative impact to others. Thus, if our authentic acts do not harm anyone in the society, then it is recommended and acknowledged (Hatzimoysis 131).

Freewill makes people in command of their choices and actions. It allows being free to think, making preferences and determining destiny. As a result, individuals become responsible for their actions to other people around them. Thus, if we are encountered with unavoidable circumstances, we are still able to choose how we are in those situations even if the circumstances were not a result of our actions (Reynolds 232). A good example is a nation faced with war. The people cannot be said to be the main cause of the war, but the leaders are to take the blame. In this situation, the leaders are to be an example for the society; thus, they are supposed to make good decisions for a better society, else the people will be responsible if something negative happens. It is due to the fact that the people selected these leaders; hence, the first ones are also responsible.

Inauthentic behaviour is not acceptable in the formal working places. An employee shouting to other employees instead of using low tone for communication demonstrates inauthentic behaviour. If a person shouts to other employees in an office while communicating, it shows that he does not conform to the code of ethics of an organization. Moreover, by doing this, he invades other employee’s freedom. It shows that the employee is running away from freedom. We cannot avert becoming aware of the significance of freedom in moral experience, as it requires us to acknowledge any course of action that conflicts with the value of freedom as morally untenable (Reynolds 311).

To conclude, Paul Sartre’s philosophy is significant in defining existence ethics. According to his philosophy, human beings have no predefined pattern for existence. The fundamental conditions that define the nature of a man are actions, freedom and personal choices. Through authenticity, people are able to conform to facts or experiences that are worthy of trust and belief. Freewill is another key concept that human beings need to observe. It enables people to determine their own destiny.
