Manic Depression

Introduction

Today's fast-moving world, the quick tempo of life, the business of people, and the development of new technologies influence people's life not only positively, but negatively. The present lifestyle demands to spend as little time on rest and relaxation as it is possible. People are constantly in a hurry, forgetting about their health and do not take care of their state of soul and mental health. They are too busy to think that they live in circumstances that are threatening their life. It is probably for this reason that people complain about constant headaches and fatigue.

People more and more face stress, nervous tension and depression in their routine lives. Depression had become a normal phenomenon that disturbs people’s pace of life every day. One can not even think that problems at work and family troubles can cardinally change their life.

People's business and overworking make them feel tired, pessimistic, angry, hopeless, slow, unhappy, irritable, sad, and anxious. If they do not struggle with such a state, it will cause certain serious complications with physical and mental health. It is not strange that a lot of people suffer from manic depression that is a disease that is evoked by the tense lifestyle and quality of life. It is not easy to live a happy rewarding life. However, if one wants to avoid manic depression, he or she should change the attitude to life and to problems. Pain, suffering, and stress will not help and will only bring problems with mental health.

Without a doubt, work, family, and career are extremely important for every person but they will cost nothing without health. Health is the basement of a happy life. The proverb says that health is above wealth and that is the undeniable truth. Life is too short to be spent on sufferings and problems. One should be careful and protect oneself from stresses, depression, fatigue, nervousness, and irritability as they can cause difficulties for treatment illness as manic depression.

The Notion of Manic Depression

The notion of manic depression was known in medieval times. However, it was explained from the religious point of view as some demonic state. Witches were named depressives. Psychiatric interpretations and treatment of depression were given by a French physician, Philippe Pinel in 1793. The second person who was interested in depression was Freud who stated that depression was related to some childhood trauma and the state of soul of a personality.

The Freudian theory proved that depression was the result of feelings of hostility and guilt to oneself. In our society, there is the stereotype that people with mental problems are not of full value and that is why they were tortured, scorned, mocked, and laughed at. Society ignored and is still ignoring such people, depriving them of their right to live a normal life. The government and society should be lenient to such people (Jamison, 1992).

Unfortunately, the notion “manic depression” has negative associations for us and it is the stereotype that should be ruined. People created the myths that patients with manic depression are dangerous and should be isolated from society. There is also another myth that mental illnesses are incurable, however, it is also false thought.

Psychological disorders are mental illnesses that can be treatable with special drugs and psychotherapy. If a patient gets the necessary treatment, he/she can live a normal life. About 3-4 percent of people suffer from depression and 1-2 percent of people suffer from manic depression.

Manic depression or bipolar disorder is a major emotional disorder, mood disorder, unstable effective state, characterized by dramatic mood changes, fatigue, nervousness, and unstable emotional state. Bipolar disorder is a condition and state of the soul when one suffers from sleeplessness, hallucinations, psychosis, grandiose delusions, and/or paranoid rage. Manic depression has different symptoms and in most cases, they are connected with the moral state of soul and mental health. Every person has his/her own development and needs his/her own way of treatment.

Manic depression is not only about the change in mood, while it also influences eating, sleeping, and thinking. There are three primary types of depression: major depression, manic depression, and dysthymic disorder. Nowadays manic depression is the most difficult to be found out and treated.

Manic depression is a complex genetic and mental disorder. The mood swings can vary from mild and calm to furious and extreme. During the manic depression, one can feel disturbances in thinking and talking. It usually appears between 15 and 24 years and lasts during a lifetime. It is a rare case when manic depression is observed in children or people who are over 65 years. The acuteness of symptoms is different in different people. Some can have only a few symptoms and can work and live a normal life; others have all symptoms and are unable to live a happy and rewarding life (Jamison, 1992).

At the present time, manic depression affects 5.7 million American people and mostly these are the adults. Nobody denies the fact that this number is larger as young people aged 18 always suffer from depression and are unstable emotionally that is why their state is not treated as manic depression. However, indeed they can suffer from manic depression. Hyperactivity, inattentiveness, distractibility, and impulsivity are the features of manic depression but these characteristics may be present in teenagers at an early age.

Patients with manic depression need hospitalization and treatment in order to prevent them from risky situations that can threaten not only their mental health but a physical one. The depressed patient tends even to suicide that is why it needs attention and hospitalization as it is hard to predict their actions.

Manic depression has many symptoms that are difficult to be treated. The patients can have decreased appetite and it causes overeating and gaining weight. People with manic depression can not concentrate, remember and make decisions and that is why one can feel that they are far from reality. Their state is characterized by fatigue, decreased energy, and being "slowed down". They are very often indifferent and do not show any interest. The patients with manic depression have feelings of guilt, hopelessness, worthlessness, helplessness, and pessimism. They suffer from insomnia, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping. As wee see they can live a normal life as they feel headache, chronic pain, and digestive disorders for no reason (Nazario, 2012).

The signs of manic depression are severe insomnia, disconnected and racing thoughts, poor judgment, grandiose notions, markedly increased energy, inappropriate elation, increased talking speed, inappropriate irritability, increased sexual desire, inappropriate social behavior, etc.

Manic depression is a two-polar disease as it consists of two-state mania and depression. The scientists proved that manic depression is more frequently observed in women.

In conclusion, it is necessary to say that manic depression is a mental disorder that has many symptoms and is provoked by stress caused by life problems. This disease can happen in people of all age groups as it is also a genetic disease. Manic depression is difficult for treating as it is often confused with depression. However, it is more complicated compared to depression. Manic depression is a complex genetic and mental disorder. It is the disease of people who constantly face overworking, a little sleeping, and stressful situations.

The Reasons of Manic Depression

Manic depression is the inherited disease that is why it is difficult or sometimes impossible to be treated. It often passes from mother to child. There is also a theory that manic depression is caused by different genes in the organism. As a rule, genetic diseases happened as a result of the failure of the higher emotional center. It also may be caused by various factors that can bring strong emotional stresses, such as unhappy relationships, family problems, other diseases, etc.

Manic depression is connected with such mental diseases as neurosis, psychosis, schizophrenia, depression, psychopathy which are caused by brain damage, infection, injury or intoxication, etc. Many patients do not have the necessary treatment because of confusion of manic depression with simple changes of mood. Manic disorder is a biological disorder that can be caused even by drugs and alcohol abuse.

The treatment of manic depression demands using antipsychotic drugs. These drugs reduce excitement and produce sedation. Moreover, patients with such diagnoses use lithium salts and haloperidol. However, the use of any drugs should be under the strict control of the doctor. The patients also use antidepressants; receive an intensive course of drugs and electroconvulsive therapy along with diets, therapeutic procedures, and sometimes oversleeping. Patients with manic depression use also mood stabilizers. As wee see there are a lot of ways of treating this disease and the right combination of them can bring positive results (Groberman, 2011).

In conclusion, it is necessary to mention that the main reasons of manic depression are genes, the tense lifestyle, the strong moral and mental stresses, and life problems. The mental health of every person depends on his/her attitude to life and troubles.

The Difference between Depression and Manic Depression

There is an idea that there are no differences between depression and manic depression. However, this thought is false and one should not confuse these two absolutely different notions. Without a doubt, these two notions have the common word “depression” in their names. It is no wonder why they are often confused.

Manic depression is bipolar disorder and depression is only the part of this disease. As we see manic depression is a wider notion and depression is only its component. Manic depression is characterized by such symptoms as: sad and unhappy feelings that last at least two weeks, crying without reason, feelings of worthlessness, lack of energy, and loss of interest in any activity. Depression is characterized by the same symptoms and that is why it is difficult to distinguish manic depression from depression. Manic depression can be treated with the help of psychotherapy and medicine (Grohol, 2012).

Mania is the characteristic symptom of manic depression and it differentiates it from depression. Mania provokes different feelings from happiness, excitement, and confidence to the oddity, aggressiveness, and irritability. Mania is accompanied by the quick and uncontrolled ideas, thoughts or making a speech, thinking of oneself as very important, talented or special, making unimportant and poor judgments, such as wealth, money, relationships, popularity or passion to gambling and involving in risky situations or taking risks even if it is dangerously (Todd, 1997).

One can distinguish the following symptoms of mania: changes in one’s mood, behavioral speech. Amid mood, symptoms can be elation, depression, euphoria, and aggression. It can be also humorous, irritable, and argumentative. Behavior symptoms consist of grandiose acts, socially active lifestyle, the need for little sleep, sexually overactive life, ambitious plans, and increased hyperactivity. Speech symptoms can be the following: the quick changes of ideas, the pressure of speech, detailed information, distractibility, humor, illusions, and grandiosity (Grohol, 2012).
