Business Requirements for Data Warehouse

The Scope of the Project

The modern information architecture is more dynamic than some of a few years ago: organizations and businesses currently tend to demand more well-analyzed and accurate information. To maintain and to keep up with the rising demand, XYZ data collection and Analysis Company seeks to expand the holding capacity of the data warehouse by 20% annually. This research paper seeks to analyze current and future practices that will enable the company in attaining its stipulated goal.

First and foremost, it is important to understand the concept and functioning of the data warehouse. It is a national database that is formulated for the query and analysis of information (data). It includes historical data that is derived from the data transactions. It can as well include data from various sources. Therefore, the XYZ Company needs to increase the volume capacity of its database warehouse to enable the organization in gathering and consolidating data from many other sources.

Controlling the Scope

To achieve high capacity and a successful data warehouse, the company has to follow measures and practices that can be observed. Firstly, the company should ensure that the current customer is served well and his/her data requirements delivered on time. This will ensure that the current customer continues bringing in his/her data workload to the Company.

Secondly, empower marketing success by facing increased demand from the existing customers and ensuring that the output is efficient and appealing. Thirdly, the company should incorporate business marketing strategies that enhance reaching targeted potential customers. By increasing the number of customers, the company will be in a position to processes more data and hence the need to expand the database warehouse capacity (Ward & Peppard, 2007).

However, the company should ensure that the warehouse has a balanced configuration. A sized end-to-end hardware configuration will ensure that the Company achieves optimal performance in data collection and analysis. This kind of hardware is referred to as a balanced system. This type of system ensures that all components from the CPU to the disks are coordinated to work coherently for a maximum IO throughput. To attain this kind of performance, the company must understand that the capacity is required for each system and volume of throughput; consequently, each CPU can be configured. This will ensure that the rising demand for data from the present and future customers can be analyzed efficiently.

Possible Risks

One of the possible risks could be even after the Company has invested in database warehouse improvement: customers may not respond by bringing in bulky load work. The main goal of investing in marketing and in improving the database warehouse is to attract as many customers as possible. The other possible risk could be that the stipulated 20% increase of the database is unattainable or is too large for the company.

If 20% of the increment is large, the Company would be required to invest more capital and human resource to achieve the goal. The other challenge could be the accessibility and processing of a large load of data in a short period, as well as maintaining good performance from the data ware. However, the company can resolve this risk by leveraging all available hardware resources; such as multiple IO channels, CPUs, and various disk drives and storage arrays.

One of the constraints that the Company may face to achieve a higher volume database is the unavailability of funds. The company will need a lot of capital to invest in the software and hardware part of the warehouse to attain a 20% increment in a terabyte. As the database grows in size to accommodate business and regulatory requirements and pressure of competition, the other constraint would be to ensure that the database performance is adequate and can easily answer queries if needed. The company should be in a position to handle the increasing requirements as well as combining the best approaches to attain high performance at minimal costs.

The assumption in this project is that the company will acquire more customers annually. This will ensure that 20% of the database terabyte is utilized and hence brings more revenues.

The Relationship and Integration between System and Structure

The process of data integration is complex and challenging. This is true especially to organizations that have a poor database that has unconnected systems. It is significant to note that the database is used for data storage, whereas a data warehouse is used to analyze and query the data collected and store in the database. In warehousing, the Company will use the On-Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) whereas the On-Line Transaction Process (OLTP) will be used in the database.

The database is write-optimized, while a data warehouse uses read-optimized data. The Company integrates databases by mapping information systems infrastructure. This will enable it in recognizing and determining the most appropriate hardware, software, and strategies of communications that will suit the integration process. Software systems are important because of the usage of the most efficient method of collecting and reorganizing past and current data (Powell, 2011).

As many organizations seek to expand their business and to maintain a strong competitive edge, they are trying to utilize opportunities to respond to business events more vigorously than ever. XYZ data collection and analysis is not an exception for the Company=. The Company is ensuring that it has incorporated effective IT and robust analytics, as well as an efficient data warehouse framework. The Company collects data through various assortments of activities. It is, therefore aggregated, leveraged, and analyzed to improve decision making.

The data record lifecycle starts with the capture of data through a data repository, for instance, a database. Technologies, that are responsive to data acquisition, deliver the record of data to the warehouse where the analytical process takes place. This process turns the data into useful information that later on will be used by an organization for making business decisions (Golfarelli & Rizzi, 2009).

XYZ Company will incorporate various data warehouse interfaces such as customer, location, and time dimensions. To create a coherent relationship between the database and the warehouse, the Company will create exact files for each task. This could be based on the location of data, customer, or even time. The data will then be taken to the landing area of the warehouse. The landing area is a section in the warehouse where cleaning up of data takes place before putting the data into database tables that are accessible by the end-users. The Company could use tables and columns to show the source of the data. Later, a list is formed to confirm data sources.

Managing data in innovative ways creates unparalleled opportunities for businesses as a result of the responsive need to the rising and changing markets. Managing a high volume of data is a big challenge and many data warehouses cannot manage mono homogeneous workloads. On the other hand, customers and businesses require accessing a wide variety of data for various uses, such as online analytical processing and data mining among many other users. It would be wise for XYZ to use cloud technology or cloud-like models to take advantage of many pooled resources that form the core of cloud technology. By sharing and pooling resources across multiple applications, the technology delivers increased flexibility and efficiency in the data collection and analysis processes.

Data warehousing faces its own set of security challenges. One of the main challenges is that data warehouses are large systems that serve lots of users with various needs of security. As much as the data warehouse requires a powerful and flexible security infrastructure, the capabilities of security must work in an environment that has severe performance and scalability needs. XYZ Company must ensure that it has put in place applications that prohibit unauthorized people from accessing the data or modifying it.

To manage the heavy load of data for the Company, it would be appropriate if some of the load can be outsourced to other companies. This would be cheaper for the XYZ Company because most of the time, outsourcing is less expensive, comparing to handling the whole load of work. Also, outsourcing to developing countries is less expensive due to the availability of human resources. It would also be wise if the company increase the number of staff members in the company. This is due to the increased load of work that will come along with increased terabytes in the warehouse.

To guarantee optimal performance from the warehouse and to ensure its scale as the set of data swells, the Company must observe that its hardware is ensured and configured. The hardware should be balanced and able to achieve the necessary throughput that is required to meet the load peak of the system. It should also ensure that the data loading process is as fast as possible to attract as many users (customers) as possible. This will ensure that the 20% increase in a terabyte is maximally utilized.
