Food Nowadays

Introduction

What we eat is an issue that interests people of all ages. It is important because food influences health. While investigating the origin of the food, the following question arises: whether there is a need of purchasing food at the local farmers market or one should grow the tomatoes and potatoes by oneself. In this paper, I will try to trace the origin of food and define its influence on health. Investigation of the industrial part in The Omnivore’s Dilemma helped to provide a good assessment of the question we are researching. I will investigate the industrial food chain, the origin of the food I consume, and its nutritive qualities for my health. The question of the research relates to the investigation of the way food arrives at people’s tables. It was necessary to gather some background that is why I decided to turn to the data based on the corn farm of George Naylor in Iowa.

The organism of people in the world that we can investigate repeatedly. “The body needs fuel. But this need could be served by a rough diet of small game, roots, and berries, as it was for several million years. Or, even more extreme, pills could be synthesized to give us all we need (except bulk). But our “tastes” have never been governed solely by nutrition. Modern nutritionists chanted the litany of the “four food types” (vegetables, grains, dairy products, meats) from which we were supposed to take more or less equal amounts daily.” (Fox) At the timeframe of globalization, people do not pay much attention to what they eat due to time constraints, availability of conveniences, a large variety of shops with a rich choice of food, and finally, there is even an option of ordering meals via the internet.

When we analyze the food chain of the majority of families nowadays, we observe a fact that only the minority eat food without nitrates, fertilizer, preservatives, etc.

When we analyze the daily food of people, we observe that every one of us has faced the dilemma, “What to eat?” At the grocer’s we have a great diversification of food that helps us to eat various products. People do not rely greatly on the content of the market shelves. They buy what the sellers propose to them.

When people some products they pay attention to the following factors: price, taste, calorie content, freshness, and the impact that this particular product has on human health conditions. Consequently, people eat what they like. In this case, they do not think much about the environmental factors and their influence on the organism of people.

The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan helped to trace the issue of food as the cult, its features, origin, and role in the life of humanity, the analysis of would be carried out. The origin of the food takes additional attention and needs a thorough investigation.

Food production is the other issue that the researchers turn to when it comes to the system of food production. This system is a source of the major part of current American meals. Corn is a basis for industrial foods. The Omnivore's Dilemma pays much attention to the issue describing how corn has become a key component of the American diet. People consume it mostly as a combination of natural-biological factors. The author has visited the corn farm of George Naylor in Iowa to gather more information about this product. Additional attention he pays to the significance of the petroleum role in the cultivation, treatment, and delivery system of the American food supply. Finally, the author analyzes the meals and its on people’s health. A great amount of food people consumes in the fast-food chains. This influences the health of people greatly.

Conclusion

Nowadays food differs greatly from the food that people ate 100-150 years ago. People nowadays can choose what to buy. They can also buy already cooked or semi-finished products or even different foreign foods in every shop or supermarket. People should not forget that according to the authors’ approach towards the nowadays culture of food, “we eat by the grace of nature, not industry, and what we are eating is never anything more or less than the body of the world” (Pollan, 2006). We should respect nature and its gifts and understand that we should be thankful for what we have.
