Title page for a research paper

How to make a title page for a research paper? This is the question you would ask yourself in your research. Since a research paper title page varies in accordance to the writing style, it is vital to seek information on the same with regards to the recommended academic formatting.

A research paper title page is essential for the description of academic credentials. Whether the research paper title page is presented in APA format or MLA style, the following credentials are included;

  • Research topic
  • Name of the student
  • Name of the academic institution
  • Course and unit of study
  • Name of the instructor or tutor
  • Date

It is vital to note that the contents of a research paper title page vary according to the instructions and the academic formatting styles. The commonly used and academically approved writing styles include APA and MLA. However, instructors also inquire for Harvard, Chicago/Turabian and Oxford among others.

The latest APA formatting style (6th Edition) is often used for social sciences while the MLA style is used for business and management work.

Research paper in APA style

The research title page in APA format is the cover page, separated from the rest of the research content by a keyboard command (Ctrl+Enter). In APA, the title page highlights;

  • Topic of research
  • Name of the student
  • Academic institution

These contents should be center-spaced (Ctrl+E). Placing the cursor at the beginning of the topic, one presses the Enter key, 4 times simultaneously. After you capitalize the keywords of the title page, it is recommended to click on the header. In this step, you should click the “Different Page” command and the header’s page number (3). After that, one should type the running head and the research topic, which should be ‘flush left’ for separation from the page number. Lastly, one should ensure that the content is in the correct font and spacing.

MLA style

The MLA style format for the title page of a research paper differs from the typical MLA formatting guidelines. Regarding the instructions for the paper margin, font, and spacing, you should ensure the following content (which should be center-spaced) is on the title page:

  • Name of the institution
  • Research title (After skipping down the page by one-third)
  • Skipping an additional 3 lines, you should type;
    • Your name
    • Course and number
    • Instructor
    • Due date

It is appropriate to consider the instructor’s guidelines while writing the title page of the research paper since differences in the details emerge according to the wishes of the tutors or institutions.
