It is unlikely that the importance of friendship can ever be overestimated. At different stages of our lives we often retreat to people we call true friends. Now we could refer to the recent surveys and researches that prove how important friends are in our lives but this is something we know without any proofs. More than that, it seems like friendship has always been one of our best life teachers. Now for teenagers friends play a vital role in how they view themselves and how they view life in general.

Building relationships isn’t always easy and it all starts from school really. But having a fresh start in college means teenagers have to make friends with new people which isn’t always easy (especially for introverts). Besides, there are always those who want to make friends but they simply don’t know how to do it when they find themselves in a completely new surrounding.

Well, making friends in college is easier if you know some of the friendship tricks listed below. It is our pleasure to share them with you today.

Finding New Friends in College

Be Yourself. The biggest mistake people make when trying to make a good impression on someone is they try to appear better than they really are which often looks quite awkward. If you learn one thing about how to make friends in college, it should be being the real you. It doesn’t really matter which college you go to, there still be those who will share your true interests. Becoming friends with someone means allowing your own personality shine through everything you do or say when you don’t have to pretend to be someone else.

Talk to your dorm mates. If you live in a dorm, then use it to your advantage. Dormitories are nothing but places filled with freshmen going through pretty many similar experiences. Besides, dorms are venues for many events that are meant to help young people meet new friends. The very fact that you have dorm mates allows you talking about shared feelings like homesick feelings for example.

Visit the events and engage yourself in extracurricular activities. Making friends is easy when you join all kinds of clubs that you like. Spending time with people who share your interests creates a bond upon which true friendship is often built. Besides, it will automatically generate opportunities to talk to people about something you like.

Expand your general knowledge about everything. Making friends in university or college often starts from conversations. Now if you know a little about everything it will help you be involved in all kinds of dialogues. This will make you an interesting person to talk to which will result in people coming over to you to get to know you better.

Learn to find common ground. How to make friends in college often equals to finding common ground with other freshmen. You simply need to pay attention to what people around you say about each other and you will know about the experiences and hobbies that can become a common ground with certain people. If you know someone with mutual interests then all you have to do is open your mouth and say “Hi”. We are sure that you will do just fine from there.

Food connects people. Having a meal with someone is a nice way to get closer to a new person. It is known that people have bonded over food so often in the past and honestly nothing has changed since then really.

Ask simple questions. Making friends can be difficult for people who don’t know how to approach someone first. They are afraid to come over new college students because they don’t know what to talk about. In such situations we suggest sticking to the usual questions like “What classes are you taking?” or simply “Where are you from?” This shouldn’t be a tough task to ask  questions like that.

Invite people to join you in something you normally do on your own. If you are going to the gym daily or do the running in the mornings, you can invite someone to share in the activity.  Doing something with others is a good starting point to make friends.

Be a friend yourself. If you want to make friends with people you need to learn how to be a good friend yourself. We often expect people to be friendly toward us but the truth of the matter is we forget that it is a two way relationship where we have our responsibility to be a good friend to those around us. If you learn to be a good partner to others, then it is most likely people will want to be your friends.

Final Remarks

In the era of online communications when people can even buy friends (followers), it is so important that people know how to build real relationships. It is especially important when young people go to college as it is the time where their personality is under the greatest influence of friends. And if it happens that one doesn’t have any friends at all, it would have a huge negative impact on the one’s psychology. Making friends then is an essential skill to have. Interestingly enough, the Bible says that “iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another”. True friends make us better while we also help our friends develop and become better people.
